Monticello Show Schedule
The Monticello Arts Council is worked with the Minnesota Gladiolus Society to bring “Art as Flowers”
for the community to enjoy with an exhibit showing off the “best of the best” grown by Minnesota’s loyal
gladiolus gardeners. More than twenty different color classifications exist in the show with five different sizes from miniature to giant florets. Members entering the “People’s Choice” Class will have patrons attending the show voting for for their favorite gladiolus.
The artistic arrangement categories will celebrate Monticello with a variety of themes related to the community. Monticello is mid-Minnesota city located on the mighty Mississippi River celebrating 150 years and during the winter months is home to over 1,000 trumpeter swans who visit the open waters on the river. Decorative category themes include titles such as: Trumpeter Swans Winter Habitat on the Banks of the Mississippi, Extraordinary Educator – Tom Keating “2004 Teacher of the Year,” An Avian Ballet, Small town atmosphere on the banks of ‘Ol Man River, Nature’s Elegant Gift and Art in the Park among others. Principals of good design through arrangement of beautiful Gladiolus will be used to interpret these themes and Art as Flowers will be on display for all to see.Show classes will include youth (17 and under) amateur adult, Intermediate adult and local single spike (for local growers within a 25 mile radius of Monticello, MN.
All residents of the State of Minnesota and/or all Members of the Minnesota Gladiolus Society may exhibit. All gladiolus must be grown by the exhibitor, except in the arrangement division. Glads will be available at the show for the arrangers to use in their arrangements.At 2 p.m. Saturday, there will be a special contest for young people under age 18 called “Youth On the Spot Arrangement.” Contestants will be given a patina
container, a half-block of oasis and gladiolus flowers for their arrangement and are encouraged to bring their own greens, flowers or props as they see fit. An entry form can be obtained on the Arts Council website for this youth contest. All gladiolus entries are due on the show tables before 11 a.m. Saturday. Judging for glad entries will occur from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with the show opening to the public at 1p.m. On Sunday at 1 p.m. the Monticello Community Strings will perform an instrumental music concert.
The Arts Council encourages all ages to attend this flower show to enjoy the beauty of Minnesota gladiolus at their best. Admission is Free.
